by Rajmi Manatunga In the wake of charges against railway employees that they could have prevented the Telwatte train tragedy, railway guards yesterday refuted allegations that incident was caused through their negligence. A spokesman for the Railway Guards Association told the 'Daily News' that there was no lapse on the part of railway guards and station that would have led to the incident as stated in certain media reports. "Given the basic technology available it was not possible for the employees to prevent the unfortunate incident. We did our best and succeeded in saving many other trains from the disaster,' he said. According to the Transport Ministry, the Colombo-Matara express train destroyed by the tsunami was carrying around 1,500 commuters at the time of the disaster. |
