by Nadira Gunatilleke 'Shramabhimaani Pura', a housing scheme consisting of 100 new houses built for Tsunami victims rendered homeless, was vested in the public by Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath recently. This is the second phase of such housing schemes built by the JVP Relief Task Force (Sahana Seva Balakaya) with the assistance of Care International. About 1500 members of the task force contributed their labour for this housing scheme. In the first phase `Sindujaya Pura' a housing scheme consisting of 50 new houses was handed over to the public. The foundation stone was laid for a `Tsunami Monument' to be built at Kirinda. A boat repairing project was also commenced at the same occasion. Toys were distributed among the children of the area. The Beruwala Cultural Centre operating under the purview of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry commenced an `Early Childhood Development Centre' at its premises with the intention of providing pre-school education for the Tsunami victim children. Donations such as kiddies tables, chairs, toys, cupboards and other equipment are now accepted by Nimal Karunaratne, the Cultural Officer in Charge, Beruwala Cultural Centre, Viharakanda, Payagala. Cultural Affairs and National Heritage deputy Minister Samantha Vidyaratne, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Deputy Minister Nihal Galappaththi and Gampaha District MP Ms.Anjan Umma were also present. |
