'We can rebuild mansions but can't restore lost lives'

by D. B. Elkaduwa

We can rebuild mansions and rehabilitate many other things that were devastated by the tsunami tidal waves but we cannot restore the lost lives, said. Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake. "The best tribute we can pay the tsunami victims who were killed is our country working as one people to retrieve the country ignoring all manner of divisions and discriminations. This is how so many countries that were ravaged by wars and various other disasters came back to life in the past", the Deputy Minister observed.

Addressing the Samurdhi volunteers from Matale district who had collected aid from the Matale district and were on their way to Habaraduwa to distribute aid, and clear the debris left behind by the tsunami tidal waves of December 26, Deputy Minister Dissanayake said that the responsibility resting on Samurdhi Officers was enormous and that they must be prepared to sacrifice not only a mere 8 to 10 hours of work but the whole 24 hours a day to serve the helpless victims as our people, who displayed their spirit of humanism on the fateful day of December 26.

He expressed optimism of resurrecting the development process of our country, more speedily, in the face of the efficient management and the dedication of the Freedom Alliance Government assisted by the benevolence forthcoming from the local and international sources.
