Singapore's assistance for tsunami victims and reconstruction in Sri Lanka

The Government and the people of Singapore rendered enormous financial and material assistance to Sri Lanka since the disaster. The High Commission of Sri Lanka had dispatched 23 container loads of various items and it is believed that approximately a further 27 container loads of such items have been dispatched by Buddhist temples, companies and individuals.

The High Commission has also sent medical supplies worth approximately S$ 150,000 by air with the assistance of SriLankan Airlines and Cathay Pacific. A further S$ 100,000 worth of medical supplies have been dispatched by Temasek Holdings, a Government of Singapore-owned conglomerate. Temasek has also made available a sum of US$ 1 million for an identified reconstruction project.

The Government of Singapore itself have dispatched food packs and medical supplies by air and a further 7 tons of medical supplies were sent on January 11 and 12, states the High Commissioner in Singapore for Sri Lanka, Ajith Jayaratne.

A sum of S$ 345,000 (Rs. 21 million approximately) collected by this High Commission was also credited to "President's Fund for Disaster Relief" account.

The Parkway Hospitals Group had a team of medical experts functioning in Galle. They returned to Singapore on January 11 after a 10-day mission in Sri Lanka. The Singapore International Foundation in collaboration with Ren Ci Hospital, Medicare Centre and MediaCorp is sending a 54-member team to Sri Lanka on January 13 to assist people in Matara. The team consists of doctors and artistes of the MediaCorp. Ang Mo Kio Hospital in Singapore is also sending a 70-member medical team shortly. TT Singapore donated 500 portable generators and 2500 emergency lamps.

The Singapore Government and major Singaporean companies would be prepared in the medium and long-term to assist further in the reconstruction programme.
