Maldives lift Emerging Nations' Cup by N. U. Abdul Razzak in Male' Maldives proved their might in cricket when they convincingly beat Thailand by 117 runs to lift the Four Nations' Emerging Trophy championship conducted by the Asian Cricket Council (A.C.C.) in Bangkok Thailand. In the final played last Sunday the Maldivian boys under the able leadership of Moosa Kaleem thrashed hosts Thailand. Invited to bat Maldivians made a healthy total of 240 runs. The Maldivian innings revolved around their reliable skipper Moosa who has the feat of registering his third century in four appearances in the tournament. He hammered an elegant 119 to get the Maldivian total to a respectable 240. Wicket keeper batsman Abdullah Shafeeu and vice captain Afzal Faiz gave a valuable support contributing with 46 and 32 respectively. Thailand who were packed with the expatriates from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India got the second spot with two wins and a loss which was against the Maldives in the first round were never allowed to make any worthy progress in batting as the Maldivian bowlers got back to action from the very out set of their innings. Moosa who shone earlier as a batsman caused havoc for the hosts by claiming four wickets. Eventually Thailand were bowled out for 123 runs in the 37th over giving a clear victory to the Maldives. Young Neesham who grabbed six wickets in his previous encounter which was against Brunei got three scalps while his fellow seamer Abdullah Shahid got two wickets. This vital victory in cricket is a land mark for the Maldives at this hour of sorrow of the tragedy of tsunami. Moosa and his team mates will be given a rousing welcome when they return to the country for bringing honour to the country. Four countries the Hosts Thailand, Bruinai, Bhutan and the Maldives were in action in Bangkok from February 2 to February 6, 2005. |
