| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Cabinet approves reconstruction of damaged Local Govt. institutions by Nadira Gunatilleke and Manjula Fernando Cabinet has approved to provide capital to reconstruct Local Government institutions destroyed by the tsunami. This follows a Cabinet paper presented by Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon. Cabinet spokesman Minister Mangala Samaraweera said 50 per cent of the estimated damage will be granted immediately and the Government wished to commence rehabilitation work soon. He said the damage caused by the tsunami to the Galle Municipal Council building has been estimated at Rs. 4.5 million and the estimated cost of the damaged caused to all equipment is Rs. 2.7 million. The estimated cost of damage caused to the buildings belonging to the Hikkaduwa Urban Council is Rs. 5 million and minor damages have been reported from the Hikkaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha and Habaraduwa Pradeshiya Sabha. No damage is being reported to equipment. Minister Samaraweera said: "Minor damages have been reported from Balapitiya and Kosgoda. There is no damage reported from Ambalangoda. The estimated damage caused to the Matara Urban Council Building is Rs. 2.8 million. No damage has been caused to the Weligama Urban Council but damages have been reported from the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha. Severe damage have been reported from the Dikwella Pradeshiya Sabha. All the damaged Pradeshiya Sabha buildings will be re-built out of the 100 metre buffer zone. No building will be re-built within 100 meters, he said. No damages have been reported from Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Hambantota district. Pottuvil, Thirukkovil and Addalaichenai Pradeshiya Sabhas had been damaged and funds were allocated to re-build them. Kathankudi, Manamune and Eruwilpaththu, Nammune, Trincomalee Urban Council, Kuchchaweli Pradeshiya Sabha and Marithenpaththu Pradeshiya Sabhas have been damaged. The damage caused to the Mullaitivu Pradeshiya Sabha is Rs. 10 million. No damage was reported from Welwetithurei. The worst damage was to Point Pedro and estimated at Rs. 25 million, the Minister said. |
