| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Emergency in 14 districts passed by our Parliament correspondent Emergency Regulations covering 14 districts were passed in Parliament by a majority of 86 votes with 106 voting for and 20 against. The JHU, CWC and SLMC rebel MPs voted with the Government for the motion while the TNA and UNP MPs' T. Maheshwaran and P. Radhakrishnan voted against. The main Opposition UNP abstained from voting while SLMC members were not present at the time of voting. Minister of Public Security, Law and Order Ratnasiri Wickremanayake assured Parliament that the Government will not use the emergency regulations against the people. "These regulations will be utilised to provide facilities and essential services to the affected. We are not going to use this regulations against the trade unions or the public," he said. |
