Piyadasa The Government has taken steps to implement the new maternity leave package for female Government Servants with effect from January 01, this year. Accordingly, a female state employee, irrespective of status of permanency will be entitled to 84 working days of full pay leave in addition to 84 days of half pay leave and 84 days of no pay leave to be enjoyed on their option. Maternity Leave for the first four weeks immediately following the delivery is compulsory. According to Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry Secretary D. Dissanayake, Maternity Leave is obtainable on a Medical Certificate or on production of the certificate of birth of the child and the leave will not be set off against any other statutory leave for which employees are entitled to. In the event of a still birth or death of the child within six weeks, the mother on production of a medical certificate or death certificate of the child can obtain six weeks full pay leave. In the event of an abortion, a female employee can make use of her normal vacation leave on production of a medical certificate. Further, a female employee after delivery can leave her place of work one hour ahead of the normal time of departure for lactation purposes till the child is six months old. On reaching five months of pregnancy a female employee is entitled to late attendance for half an hour at the beginning of normal working hours and leave half an hour ahead of the normal time of departure. She can enjoy this privilege only till the commencement of her maternity leave. |
