Grenade attack at Mannar LTTE office; one killed, two injured

by Chula Bandara Kulasekera and Ananda Pathiraja

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) office in Mannar came under a grenade attack on Saturday which killed a civilian and wounded two other LTTE members.

Mannar Police said the dead victim had been identified as M. M. V. Calistus, a resident of Mannar. Police said two persons in critical condition were transferred to the Anuradhapura District hospital.

One wounded is said to be Sebastianpillai Vijayakumar, an Indian, who had arrived in the country three days before the attack.

The grenade has been hurled by some people who had come in a three-wheeler. Calistus had been in the LTTE office at the time of the attack, police said.

The LTTE had put the area under strict surveillance and prohibited entry to the area where the attack took place.

This had prevented police conducting investigations until yesterday morning when the SLMM negotiated with the LTTE, police said.
