Anura Bandaranaike - man of the era

It's obvious truth that he had been renowned as a high class scholar politician with subtle knowledge of acquiring the hearts of nations irrespective of party, religion, race, creed or caste. Today February 15 is Anura's birthday.

He has understood that the country is not just the sum total of all its people from all political hues and their culture, but it includes the very earth it occupies its flora, its fauna, its lakes, rivers and even the very wind that blows across it.

There is an immense capacity with Anura from his childhood, to love all human beings of any political camp and all the above things of nature which form a precious land. Apart from political interest he showed special interest and skill in aesthetic creative thoughts. He is also a devout environmentalist and an entertainer who is always at peace with nature and lives with aesthetic outlook, besides being an excellent politician.

When he was selected to Parliament he has thoroughly understood that the primary duty and responsibility of a Parliamentarian is to make fearless, bold and correct decisions that will benefit and bring prosperity to the entire nation, having the courage of transforming those decisions into reality

. According to that view, the name Anura Bandaranaike was renowned and brighten day by day and he was fortunate to keep an inimitable record at the age of 34 being the youngest leader of the opposition.

The responsibilities that was bestowed upon him as the leader of the opposition, by the United National Party in the era of J.R. Jayewardene was so great, but he could clutch them all, having firm determination and commitment. Most of these characteristics have been inherited by him through the distinguished pedigree of Bandaranaike Family. Through a strong political upbringing due to his closest association with his loving parents, he engaged in politics extensively.

In recognition of his outstanding abilities, after three decades Anura was appointed as the Hon Speaker of the parliament. His figure of speech is remarkably attractive. He always expresses his ideas bravely, clearly and directly. His skills in this sphere were such that on numerous occasions he was appreciated not only by his followers, but all citizens and also the international mass. The speech delivered by Anura, once in a parliament session to welcome Her Excellency, Margaret Thatcher was still renowned as an exceptional speech.

Anura's outstanding contribution towards the nation is clearly shown through the way he adopted himself to exchange the idea's of youth of JVP. It also clearly points out how flexible he is to respect the other's views. He took another giant step in his expedition, when there were major concerns over the combining 2 parties to form UPFA. At that time he took the tedious task of introducing the benefit of joining, to all the members as a whole.

He successfully explained the manifestation, whilst maintaining the balance of sound political health of 2 parties. Thus he effectively dispelled fears of declining standards of behaviour in political stage and created a unique solution which was applicable and practicable to a third world country like Sri Lanka. Without his wordless generosity, probably there could have been no existence of the UPFA. Despite all challenges and difficulties he stepped forward to reach the destination of political mission.

He is very ambitious of the bright future of the nation. He is entirely positive minded and self confident of what he does. His world-shattering vision of successfully building up a strong nation; middle class and lower middle class upbringing, became so popular, specially in Nuwara Eliya and Maskeliya electorates and it encouraged many other eminent politicians in the country to nourish politics through similar efforts on their own thereafter.

What he wants is only the support of the people, to serve the motherland as a self denial and benevolent politician. He does not have a strong appetite for power or for any other material or physical assets. This feature rarely can be seen among politicians.

He faced with a smile to all distresses and calamities that bestow upon him while engaging in this political pasture. He is not furious over any political criticism. His intellect power makes him mentally balanced in prosperity as well as in adversity. He is capable of facing any revolutionary challenge that arises in the political field very pleasantly. He is so exceptional and great, he never betrays the opposition, but what he wanted is to develop the SLFP which was originated by his father and enriched by his mother.

He does all the duties on a more realistic arrangement, showing good examples for his followers and also takes the maximum utilities of the era. No words can possibly justify his saintly and perfect service. Wherever he goes he is warmly welcomed and highly respected by all the people due to his distinguished skills and capacities. Any day he will be remembered as a true visionary among great politicians for radical and sensible ideas.

Whatever we write is not in the least adequate and almost nothing in comparison with Anura's surpassing contribution to his motherland.

The encouragement and sense of purpose caused by the "thought-provoking Speeches' of Anura will surely help the new, younger politicians in their progressive expedition. His name should be undoubtedly placed on the very top if there is proper assessment of his political values. The service he renders to the country should be gratefully evaluated. The party mechanism has not yet been widened enough to take the best use of experience and knowledge of this great man. He is a man of his word and a master of himself.
