Tsunami baby reunited with parents

Junita and Murugpillai Jeyarajah were handed back their child, Abilash, the baby tsunami survivor, yesterday after a seven-week ordeal in which they passed a landmark DNA test to prove their parentage. The couple walked out of the court carrying Abilash, reunited seven weeks after the child was rescued from under a pile of garbage following the December 26 tsunami. A nurse in the Kalmunai courtroom gave the child back to his mother in front of Judge, M.P. Moahaidein, who ordered the baby to be returned to the couple. Picture by AFP


Over 50 shops, houses gutted

Over 50 shops were gutted in a massive fire which broke out in the heart of the Bogawantalawa in the wee hours of yesterday with the damage estimated at millions of rupees.

President sends condolence to Pakistan

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday sent a condolence message to her Pakistani counterpart General Pervez Musharraf expressing her deep sadness on the loss of lives and property in flash floods in Baluchistan and the NWFP.
