Sri Lanka, like the phoenix will rise to new levels of excellence from the waves of destruction

Speech made by, Minister of Ports and Aviation, Information and Media, Deputy Minister of Education and Cabinet Spokesman Mangala Samaraweera in Parliament on 10th February 2005.

It was just over a month ago that Sri Lanka experienced, what was, most probably the worst natural disaster in the long history of our country, killing nearly 40,000 people, rendering over 80,000 homeless and the economic cost running up to several billion dollars; the social cost of this tragedy is yet to be assessed.
