Business in brief ASPI up, MPI down The All Share Price Index (ASPI) which opened the day at 1720.44 points moved up by 4.17 points to close at 1724.61 points while the Milanka Price Index (MPI) recorded negative growth by moving down 11.90 points to close at 2357.58 points. Construction and Engineering (3%), Beverage Food and Tobacco (2.71%) and Trading (2.07) Sectors were the top gainers while Land & Property (1.49%) and Chemical and Pharmaceutical (1.39%) Sectors led the sectors which recorded negative growth. The Total Turnover for the day stood at Rs.393.17Mn. with the Health Care Sector contributing Rs.145.1Mn.(36.90%) to the total turnover. 4875 trades were concluded during the day. Foreign investors were net sellers in the market with sales of Rs 72.2Mn against purchases of Rs. 29.7Mn. Top Gainers for the day were Ceylon Glass (41.1%), Ceylon Brewery (25.2%) and Touchwood Investments (18.5%). New AMCHAM President Kishore Rao the President of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) has announced that he will be stepping down as President as he will be returning to India at the end of March. Rao, Managing Director of 3M Sri Lanka, has held the position of President since June 2004 and has been on the Board of Directors since 2003. AMCHAM bids farewell and good wishes to their outgoing President. Ms. Claire Snowdon the current Vice President will step into the position of President until the AGM in June 2005. British national Claire Snowdon is the Country Manager of Liz Claiborne Sri Lanka and will take up the position of President as of March 1st 2005. |
