Isipatana look to level series by Chris Dhambarage Thurstan College and Isipatana College will revive their rivalry when the two schools clash in their 42nd annual inter school Big Match at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place starting today. Isipatana will definitely have the edge over their traditional rivals simply because of their outstanding performances in the current inter school cricket season. Four victories from twelve outings is certainly a good track record for a team which comprise of only two coloursmen and a couple of other senior players. Isipatana are a confident lot and now they have a very good chance of levelling the series which stands as 5-4 in favour of Thurstan with 31 draws. Isipatana also had the honour of registering the previous victory in the series when they triumphed in 1999 under the captaincy of Krishantha Jayawardena. The Thurstanites although maintaining an unbeaten record this season have a daunting task having not beaten their rivals for more than a decade. The last time they tasted success was way back in 1992 when they emerged victorious under the captaincy of Mackenzie Perera. This win of course was fashioned by Jayajeewa Karunaratne who captured seven wickets for 28 runs which is still the best bowling figures returned in the Big Match. However the highest individual score upto now is the unbeaten knock of 150 compiled by Saman Nishantha of Isipatana in 2002. Both teams have also crossed the three hundred run mark once with Thurstan scoring 301 for 8 in 1990 and Isipatana scoring 301 all out in 1997. Isipatana has the lowest score in the series when they collapsed to 56 in the first innings in 1968. Thurstan's lowest total in a Big Match is 83 runs scored during the second innings of the 1973 encounter. |
