Hampshire Seniors to support Cricket-Aid Hampshire Seniors cricket team who postponed their scheduled tour to Sri Lanka in January because of the tsunami disaster has rearranged the tour to take place in March. The tour party of over 30 comprising players, officials, wives and club supporters has already started their own appeal fund to help the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. According to Mike Swain of the Hampshire Seniors Tour committee they have started collecting money and cricket equipment. They have also agreed to donate profits from advertising in the tour brochure to Sri Lanka Cricket's Cricket-Aid program. Further 'Cricket Telecom' an existing sponsor of Hampshire cricket has agreed to support the appeal fund by making donations related to any new business secured from supporters of Hampshire Seniors Cricket. The county's tour appeal fund promotion has been displayed on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) official website through Andrew McDermott, the ECB website editor. It has already attracted several other counties who have joined the appeal fund. Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Leicestershire have shown interest in starting their own fund and sending the money through Hampshire Seniors when they tour Sri Lanka or alternatively send it direct to Cricket-Aid. In correspondence with tour co-ordinator Errol Seneviratne of Sports Tours, Swain states the appeal money collected by the club will be presented to Sri Lanka Cricket prior to the first match on the tour. The county will also bring along with them cricket material which will be presented to two schools down South who were badly affected by the tsunami Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda and Revatha, Balapitiya. The principals of the two schools are requested to get in touch with Seneviratne (tel 2773335) to finalise dates for the presentation. The tourists are scheduled to arrive on March 18 and play their first match on March 20 against Lanka Cavaliers at De Soysa Park, Moratuwa. The rest of the matches on the tour are against SSC at SSC (March 23), v Old Trinitians SC at Asgiriya Stadium (March 27), v Dambulla Schools XI at Dambulla Stadium (March 29) and against Leo SC at Negombo (March 31). All matches will be 35-over affairs. The touring side will also be hosted to a reception by the British High Commission on March 22. |
