German philanthropist donates Rs. 666,250 to Sambodhi Children's Home in Galle

by Richmond Wijesekera, Bentota group correspondent

A German national Jorg Sperling who has visited Sri Lanka 30 times, at present holidaying Hemadan Hotel, Aluthgama claims that Sri Lanka is the most beautiful country in the world.

Sri Lanka is my second home. I love this country, its people, the archaeological treasures and the sunny beaches. But after the tsunami, by seeing the tsunami victims I feel very saddened. I saw the Sambodhi Home in Galle for the mentally and physically disabled children and is finding it hard to recover.

Though the building of the home was not destroyed, water had gushed in up to about 6 feet and taken the lives of the 48 out of the 62 inmates.

The Sambodhi Home is situated next to a sewage canal. A lot of debris from the tsunami had found its way into the canal, which overflows when there is rain, making living conditions very unhealthy for the people around specially for the residents of the home, Jorg Sperling told the Daily News.

The home needs to be rebuilt and lives brought back to normal, as far as possible, for those unfortunate souls. All-round the country efforts are being made to help the tsunami affected displaced people lead a normal life. We must not forget the disabled who are displaced.

They are a part of our community - a group that needs constant care and more help than the normal people. The Sambodhi Home finds it hard to function well due to the lack of sufficient funds.

I am very happy to donate Rs. 666,250 for the funds of the Sambodhi Home. "Today is one of the happiest days in my life" Jorg Sperling said after handing over the money to Cliff Sutherland of Canada, who is at present in-charge of the tsunami victims of the Sambodhi Home, Galle.

Jorg Sperling also said that he is making arrangements to send some more funds to the tsunami victims of Sri Lanka, in near future.
