| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Abundant strength and goodwill after tsunami must be harnessed - President by Ranil Wijayapala President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday stressed on the need of harvesting the abundant strength and goodwill that collectively emerged among the people in the aftermath of the tsunami to rebuild the devastated areas and implement the development programmes outlined in the Government's 2005 budget. Addressing the SLFP Youth Conference at the NYSC auditorium in Maharagama the President declared the main objective this year was to rebuild the nation.
"The tsunami has reawakened government officials from their lethargy and galvanised them into action. We should make use of this new enthusiasm to rebuild the nation without letting this opportunity slip by", the President said. The President said according to estimates the tsunami rebuilding and reconstruction programme would cost 1600 million US dollars in terms of the estimates drawn up by the ADB and the World Bank. "We must fulfil this task immediately", the President emphasised. She said the contribution made by the youth was essential for the task of rebuilding the nation and steps will be taken to involve suitable persons to implement this task. The President said the time was now ripe to start the development programmes proposed under the budget which were delayed in being implemented following the tsunami, for the economic well-being of the country. "We should act determinedly to convert this tragedy into victory," the President added. |
