Govt. won't privatise railways - Transport Minister

by Malmi Sellahannadi

"The Department of Railway has contributed torwards the uplift of economy and saved valuable foreign exchange, to a certain degree. The government will not privatise the railways, said Transport Minister Felix Perera.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of Railway Employees' Union office near the fort Railway station yesterday. Small and Rural Industries Minister K. D. Lal Kantha also participated on this occasion.

"Constructing an express railway track from Katunayaka to Fort would reduce travel time considerably."

The project is a joint collaboration between Transport, Ports and Aviation Ministries. Up to now the government has not introduced any document or a Cabinet Paper for the privatisation or outright sale of any government owned enterprise or corporation, Small and Rural Industries Development Minister K. D. Lalkantha said.

There is a need to introduce certain amendments to the Railway Ordinance he said.
