Italy, France block EU deal for apparels

Hopes of a quick deal to end EU trade barriers for the tsunami-ravaged countries in Asia have been dashed after Italy and France blocked reform plans. A campaign by the European Commission to secure preferential tariffs for Sri Lanka and other Asian countries that export textiles to the Continent has been obstructed by member states fearful of a surge in cheap clothing imports.

EC's GSP+ scheme to delay by three months

 

The new GSP+ Scheme of the European Commission giving zero duty for Sri Lanka's GSP eligible exports to the 25 member states of the EU which was scheduled to have come into effect by April 01 may now take two to three months to get implemented, the Department of Commerce said.

President opens upmarket resort in Tangalle

Amanwella Hotel is a latest addition to the Aman Resorts Group which own and operate several upmarket resorts in 15 countries worldwide. The Amanwella Hotel at Tangalle in the Hambantota district was opened by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse. Governor of the Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickremaratne was the guest of honour. The Amanwella Hotel is build on a 30-acre land and has 30 chalets and this is the second Aman Resort Hotel that has been opened here. On December 15, 2004, the Amangala Hotel (the former NOH) was opened in the Galle Fort by Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne. The Chairman of this Hotel Group is Vashi Mohinani and the Chairman of Aman International is Adrian Zakkar. Already the hotel has been fully booked from April 2005. Here President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in discussion with Chairman Vashi Mohinani. Also in the picture are Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Governor Southern Province, Kingsley T. Wickremaratne and Mrs. Vashi Mohinani.
