THE long delay in granting internship appointments has led to a large-scale brain drain, with newly qualified medical graduates opting to seek greener pastures abroad. The delay has caused 1600 medical graduates to kill time till their internship appointments are granted in Government hospitals.

Green light for Norochcholai

 

THE Government has decided to go ahead with the Norochcholai Thermal Power Project with Chinese Government support. The agreement between the two countries will be signed when Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visits Sri Lanka on April 8, a Tourism Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

Telekom Malaysia to enter Colombo Bourse

 

IN a major sign of confidence in Sri Lanka's post-tsunami economic recovery, a leading Malaysian telecom giant yesterday announced the proposed listing of its Sri Lankan subsidiary on the Colombo Stock Exchange. Telekom Malaysia Berhad will shortly list MTN Networks, its wholly-owned Sri Lankan subsidiary, on the Colombo Bourse. MTN Networks operates Dialog GSM, the cellular network.

ADB to provide additional assistance for housing

 

The Asian Development Bank is preparing a project for Board consideration to provide an additional $40 million, including a grant of $14 million, to continue reconstruction in conflict affected areas in the North and East the visiting Vice President of the ADB Jin Liquan said in Colombo yesterday.

Cricket shock ! Sports Minister dissolves SLC

 

MINISTER of Sports and Youth Affairs, Jeevan Kumaratunga yesterday dissolved Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), ending a weeklong speculation, which, the Minister had denied earlier. The Sports Minister's shocking decision came just three days away from the annual general meeting of the SLC, at which Thilanga Sumathipala was to be elected uncontested as president for a record fourth term.
