THE JVP Propaganda Secretary and UPFA Colombo District MP, Wimal
Weerawansa said yesterday it was Sri Lanka's duty to oppose
internationally this US sponsored resolution before United Nations Human
Right Commission's 61st Convention against Cuba.
"Sri Lanka as a member of the United Nations with voting rights has
an international duty to vote against the US sponsored resolution based
on US's traditional opposition towards Cuba," Weerawansa added.
"The United States has brought a resolution before United Nation's
Human Rights Commission's 61st session being held from March 14 to April
22 declaring that human right violations are taking place in Cuba,"
Weerawansa added.
He said the aim of the United States through the presenting of this
resolution was to internationally justify their activities against Cuba.
He pointed out that no such human rights violations taking place in
Cuba as mentioned by United States.
"We believe Sri Lanka's the Foreign Ministry will be able to do its
duty towards Cuba by voting in favour of Cuba. By doing so we are not
going against the powerful United States. We should take this as our
humane duty towards favouring the justice," he said.
"We hope the Foreign Ministry and the President as the head of state
will get strength and courage towards fulfilling this human duty,"
