THE Government could sign a deal brokered by Norway with the LTTE to provide a formula for distributing tsunami relief as long as it was not seen as giving the LTTE de facto recognition as a Government, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said.

Top priority for reconstruction
 

THREE months after the worst natural calamity faced by the country, reconstruction of tsunami-hit areas is considered a top priority by the Government. Several projects which have already been started are going ahead as scheduled and will be completed with the given time frame, a Government spokesman said yesterday. The reconstruction drive started from Hambantota.

137 Lankans stranded near Red Sea
 

THE Sri Lankan Embassy in Cairo has been informed by Egyptian authorities that 137 persons claiming to be Sri Lankans have been stranded at the Egyptian Red Sea border point of Halayeb and Shalateen, approximately 500 km away from Cairo.

BUSINESS

ADB to provide additional assistance for housing

 

The Asian Development Bank is preparing a project for Board consideration to provide an additional $40 million, including a grant of $14 million, to continue reconstruction in conflict affected areas in the North and East the visiting Vice President of the ADB Jin Liquan said in Colombo yesterday.

Younis (267) puts Pakistan in command
 

VICE-CAPTAIN Younis Khan struck a career-best 267 to help Pakistan to an imposing first innings 570 on the second day of the third and final test against India on Friday. Younis, playing his 35th test, exploited a placid pitch to hammer 32 fours and a six in his marathon 504-ball knock, batting for 11-1/2 hours in sapping heat.
