Parliament will not be dissolved, says Mangala
 

GOVERNMENT Spokesman and Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday scoffed a report in an English daily that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was intending to dissolve Parliament and go for an election. The Minister in a media release expressed doubt whether this was an April Fool's Day joke or a day dream of those who want to topple the Government.

Religious ceremonies mark UPFA's first anniversary
 

THE United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government will mark its first anniversary today with religious ceremonies in the Anuradhapura city with the participation of leaders representing all constituent parties. The religious ceremonies are scheduled to commence with Buddhist religious observances from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.

‘Queen Elizabeth’, one of the largest luxury passenger ships was anchored in Colombo last month, carrying over 1,600 passengers and a crew of 1,200. The passengers visited Pinnawela Elephant orphanage and Colombo City. An official of Lewis shipping (Pvt) Ltd, local agents for the ship said more cruse liners are expected to arrive in Colombo in the future.

Sri Lanka to sign Maritime Trade Practice Act


Sri Lanka will soon sign a Maritime Trade Practice Act to ensure smooth maritime practices in the region. Speaking to the Daily News after the 16th annual general meeting of the Association of Shippers' Council of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka held in Colombo last Friday at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Auditorium, Chairman of the ASCOBIPS Council, Parhad Ahamed said that India is taking the lead role in this.
