Army clinch women's Rugby sevens title
The Sri Lanka Army Women's rugby team for the second time clinched
the Rugby Development Trophy in grand style by beating the more
experienced Slimline SC by 26 points (three goals one try) to nil at the
Havelock Park on Saturday.
Both the Sri Lanka Army and Slimline SC consisted of national players
who brought the Bowl Trophy to Sri Lanka at the Singapore tournament
recently. However, Slimline gave a fine display before they went down to
the fast playing Army. Slimline played sans four regular players since
they were injured in semi-finals who played gallantly against the mighty
Hong Kong Rugby team.
The Army Women who played a magnificent game in all departments won
this final easily and won this trophy for the second time.
This fourth all island Inter-Club women's tournament was conducted by
the Rugby Development Committee under the instructions of Arjun
Dharmadasa (chairman Rugby Development SLRFV) which was initiated by Lt.
Col. C.G.D. Gunasekara (Chairman Tournament Committee SLRFU).
The Chief Guest for this tournament was Priyantha Ekanayaka
(President SLRFU) while the guest of honour was Dilroy Fernando (Hony
Secretary SLRFU). Also present were Chaminda Rupasingha (National Rugby
Selector SLRFU) who gave away the awards.
A team from Sabaragamuwa Seethawaka SC who played with their hearts
out 'Minus their Boots' finally won the Bowl Trophy by beating the
formidable Sabaragamuwa RFC 15 points to 7.
A women's team from Hong Kong also took part in this which gave more
attraction for this tournament and they lifted the Plate Trophy.
The following nine teams which consists of almost one hundred
participants took part in this tournament: Slimline SC, Army A and B,
Sabaragamuwa SC, Anurdhapura RFC A and B, Seethawaka RFC (Awissawella),
CR and FC and Hong Kong RFC. |
