Bankruptcy looms for CEB

THE Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) faces an imminent crash, with far reaching consequences for the economy, if it is not restructured urgently, top sources familiar with the issue asserted yesterday. They pointed out that the Government banks cannot afford to inject more funds to the CEB as it already owes Rs.90 billion to the People's Bank alone. The CEB recorded a massive loss of Rs.39.3 billion in 2004.

More money for tea, coconut subsidies


THE Tea Small Holdings Development Authority (TSHDA) has provided Rs. 215.43 million as tea subsidies in 2004. It was 209.47 million in the previous year. A senior official of the TSHDA said there were 14,197 applicants who received replanting subsidies in 2003. It was 12,276 last year. There were no applicants recorded for new planting subsidies last year and in 2003.

Sri Lanka-Philippines boxing dual today:

A ten member Sri Lanka boxing team will meet the Philippines in the first ever international boxing meet in the country set to take place at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium today commencing at 5.00 p.m. The team comprises of six male boxers and four women boxers to make up the ten bout event.
