UN World Environment Day falls today
SRI LANKA United Nations Friendship Organisation celebrates the
United Nations World Environment Day, today, is an annual event
according to the United Nations Charter, to draw attention of the public
to join hands in support to implement this year's theme Green Cities
concept a successful, in order to make a pleasant environment, states a
media release issued by the Sri Lanka-United Nations Friendship
Organisation. SUNFO's Environment Day ceremony coincides with the
completion of 60 years of the signing of the United Nations Charter
which took place in 26th June 1945, with the participation of 50
countries in New York.
On behalf of this event a message from Kofi Annan, UN Secretary
General will be delivered at this function. SUNFO organised a Tree
Planting Campaign in tsunami effected area, from June 5th to June 25,
covering all tsunami-effected parts in North, South, East and Western
provinces of the country and 6,240 trees of following varieties were
planted: mango, jak, coconut, khomba, kottamba, avacado, gova, mudhly,
phily, karapingna, walkery, epil epil, glicenia, barrium, getonia,
aftratica. Further many organisations participated and played major role
in the tree planting campaign and some of the selected organisations
will be awarded with Environmental Services Appreciation Medal on this
occasion.
Moreover SUNFO Jewanashuri awards, SUNFO Supportive Fellow, SUNFO
Associate membership will be also awarded in this occasion. |
