Italian NGO to build tsunami destroyed school

The Co-operazione Italiana together with Italian NGO Alisei who have been engaged in tsunami rebuilding work since February this year will begin construction of the Mahavishnu Memorial School in Pandirippu, Kalmunai which was destroyed in the Boxing Day Catastrophe.

The "First Column" ceremony for the construction of Maha Vishnu Memorial School will take place on October 21 at 4.30 pm. The school will be a donation by the Italian people.

The ceremony will be attended by the Italian Ambassador in Sri Lanka together with the Kalmunai Divisional Secretary (Tamil Division) and Zonal Director of Education, Kalmunai.

The Maha Vishnu Vidyalaya was swept away by the tsunami. Of the 52 children attending classes only one survived.

The new building will consist of 9 classrooms, a multi purpose room, library and toy room.The construction undertaken by Squire Merch Engineering is due to be completed within six months.
