Police armed with modern mo-bikes to curb crimes
 

Law and Order Ministry Secretary Tilak Ranaviraja addressing a group of Policemen of the Western Province after handing them over the keys of set of brand new motorcycles equipped with modern communication systems said that their new acquisition should be purely for public benefit.

Police Transport Division Director Senior SP Anura Senanayake received Ministry Secretary, IGP and the other Senior Police officers at the entrance to the Police headquarters where the ceremony was held.

Assistant Police Commissioner Vastra Gotaland Police and National Police Board of Sweden Lars Berg also participated in this ceremony.

Ranaviraja, the chief guest at the ceremony, said these cycles should be used to attend the public information received by the Police Emergency Number 119, in order to minimise crime rate in the country.

The Finance Ministry immediately responded to the IGP's request and allocated funds to purchase these motorcycles for the benefit of public, he added.

IGP Chandra Fernando said they purchased 202 motor cycles to be distributed among the Police stations of the Western Province South. Other police stations will also receive a motorcycle each in the near future.

The IGP thanked Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera and Law and Order Ministry Secretary Thilak Ranaviraja for their assistance in this regard. These motor cycles squad will be on the spot as and when any complaints received by the 119. All complaints will be attended then and there. When an any major incident occurs, senior police personnel will be summoned to attend to the issue, the IGP said.

The public should inform to the 119 any incident such as bank robberies, vehicles robberies, operating illegal liquor dens and any other incidents, the IGP stressed.

These information will be kept strictly in secret and the informant need not come to give evidence in court when the Police prosecute the suspects, the IGP added.

Senior DIGs Sirisena Herath, Kumarasiri Gamage, Jayantha Wickremaratne, Mahinda Balasuriya, Victor Perera, DIGs Gamini Navaratne, Gunasena Thenabadu, Jayantha Gamage, Gamini de Silva, G. D. A. de Fonseka, Pujita Jayasundera, Senior SP Rienzie Perera and Senior SP L. A. Perera also participated at the ceremony.
