President renews call for peace talks

President Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday renewed his call to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for peace talks. President Rajapakse, in an address to Colombo-based diplomats, said he wanted talks with the LTTE.

Biggest allocation of funds to Samurdhi in 2006

Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi assuming duties at her Ministry yesterday said the 2006 budget has allocated the highest amount of funds to the Samurdhi Ministry giving utmost priority to further develop the Samurdhi movement.

Heavy foreign buying boosts the market

Strong foreign buying into the JKH shares and the telecom sector helped the stock market to start the week on a positive note. Foreign purchases were over 63 percent of the market with the JKH contributing to over 50 percent of the day's turnover.
