‘It’s time for a national government’
The country is facing a perilous situation with
the LTTE’s sabre rattling and threats to recommence the war and the
CWC closing ranks with it. In President Rajapakse we have a new
style politician, someone who identifies with the people in every
sense of the word just as D.S. Senanayake did. He does not appear to
stand for confrontational politics but seeks consensus. We are sick
and tired of old style politics and old style politicians. In this
perilous hour it appears that President Rajapakse is a man who can
bring about the unity we so urgently need to face this unprecedented
crisis.

Tsunami - hit women running a gauntlet of new
challenges
They were paddy cultivators, string hopper
makers or vegetable sellers before the tsunami struck exactly
one-year ago. The killer waves wrecked their lives. The pain remains
to this day, and some of the losses are permanent. But even so, many
have sprung to life and picked up the lost threads, though some have
been idling, depending on relief and grants. A few have taken to
begging too.
