Punish criminals, says Asgiriya Mahanayake Thera

Criminals found guilty of murder, robbery, rape, theft and other crimes should be punished. They should not be jailed and maintained at public expense, said the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Ratnapala Buddharakkhitha Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter.

President meets Co-Chair reps on current situation

President Mahinda Rajapakse met with the Ambassadors of the Co-Chair countries of the Tokyo Donor Conference, Japan, the United States the European Union and Norway, last morning and briefed them on the escalation of violence by the LTTE and in particular the unprovoked suicide attack on a Sri Lanka Navy Fast Attack Craft on Saturday.

The President of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Nawaz Rajabdeen presented book titled ‘FCCISL in action’ to President Mahinda Rajapakse last week. The FCCISL on an initiative from the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse launched a programme ‘back to business’ to rebuild the lively hoods and provide financial assistance to those who were affected by the tsunami. The FCCISL received US $ 750m from the German and Netherlands governments and USAID for this programme. Back to Business programme was conducted in Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Batticolca, Trincomalee and Jaffna.

Racist taunts put VB series under threat

There is the threat of South Africa pulling out of the VB Triangular Series due to begin on Friday with Australia playing Sri Lanka at the Telstra Dome, if the racist taunts by some of the Aussie spectators at some South African players continue.
