60 years of diplomacy in Asia
AT the same time that it regained its
independence with the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty in
1951, Japan also concluded the Japan-US Security Treaty with the US.
The existence of this security alliance - the dependence of Japan on
the US for security - signified the abandonment of the policy of
coercive power-based diplomacy pursued by pre-war imperial Japan in
its diplomatic relations.

Seeking roots
FOLLOWING on the very stimulating Lakshman
Kadirgamar Memorial Conference on India-China Relations, the BCIS
hosted a Conference on China-South Asia Relations. This was in
collaboration with the China Institute for International Studies,
and followed on China being granted Observer Status within the South
Asian Association for International Cooperation.
