ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup

Aussies in convincing win over South Africa

DASHING opener Top Cooper scored the first century of the ICC under 19 Youth World Cup as the former champions Australia cruised to an easy 175 run victory over South Africa in their opening group 'B' match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

Cooper hammered a splendid 104 from 141 balls with a six and a dozen of fours to help Australia piled up an imposing 316 for 9 after they had being put into bat. The South Africans in reply never looked like making a match of it and folded up for just 141 runs in 34 overs.

The Australians came into this game under tremendous pressure having lost both their warm up matches. They also lost the initiative and were struggling at 4 for 2 at one stage following some hostile bowling from the South Africans.

However Finch joined Cooper and the pair repaired the early damage with a third wicket stand of 101 runs. The hard hitting Finch hit a superb 74 from 86 balls with three fours and five sixes.

The Australian middle order also produced some good contributions with Warner smashing a sparkling 54 from exactly fifty balls with the help of two sixes and six fours.
