Batticaloa milk production on the rise

BATTICALOA: Many of the farmers in the Batticaloa district have drawn attention in cattle breeding and milk production.

Farmers are engaged in these sectors in Ridithenna, Punanai, Valaichenai, Meeravodai, Kawattamunai and Eravur areas.

They say steps taken by the government to improve the local milk production is laudable and they could get reasonable prices for the milk they produce.

The farmers also appeal to the government to provide them concessionary and interest free loan facilities to purchase good varieties of milch cows.

The national income from local milk production could be increased, if interest is drawn to this sector.

A large amount of money is spent to import milk and dairy products from many countries. In the past attention has not been paid to improve local milk production. Many of the cattle breeders were affected as a result.

Due to new steps taken by the Government, the self-sufficiency in milk production and cattle breeding could be achieved very soon, the farmers of the area said.
