Suspected rebels hang policeman, kill Hindu in Kashmir
INDIA: Suspected Muslim militants hanged a counter-insurgency
policeman and shot dead a Hindu member of a self-defence group in
revolt-hit Indian Kashmir, police said Thursday.
The policeman was hanged within hours of his kidnapping in the
southern district of Pulwama late Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
Around the same time heavily-armed militants broke into the house of
a Hindu who was a member of the village self-defence committee, and shot
him dead. The killing was reported from Udhampur district, further to
the south of Indian-held Kashmir.
The state-funded committees are armed by the government with the aim
of protecting villagers from rebel attacks. Most of the committee
members are Hindus. Srinagar, Thursday, AFP |
