 The raging floodwaters of May 17, 2003, took away not only the bridge linking Kalawana and Elawella, but also the hopes of the villagers for a better tomorrow. They later constructed this rickety suspension bridge using their own resources, but it is feared to be on the verge of collapse. Hundreds of families depend on this bridge to cross over to the bigger Kalawana town for their daily needs. The postman, pictured here, too has to undertake this perilous journey.

Port go-slow settled

Action taken to restore normal operations :

The 10-day go slow campaign by Colombo Port workers ended yesterday following extensive discussions between authorities and trade unions. The unions decided to call off the `go-slow' following an assurance by Ports and Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera that the salary issue of the SLPA workers would be solved within three months.
