Govt seeks coordinated approach to Muttur resettlement
COLOMBO: The President's Office has invited national and
international humanitarian agencies to join with the Government of Sri
Lanka in a coordinated approach to support returned Internally Displaced
Persons (IDPs) in Muttur Town, Trincomalee.
International and national aid organisations interested in supporting
a collaborative development effort for Muttur Town and the surrounding
areas are invited to contact the President's Office or submit a proposal
to the Ministry of Nation Building.
Muttur Town has been secured by the Armed Forces and the Government
is confident that relief to communities and their rehabilitation can be
undertaken in a safe and stable environment, the President's Office said
in a statement.
The Government remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all
persons as they resettle in their homes and communities. On 8, 9 and 10
September 2006, the Government provided transport facilities to those
wishing to return to their homes in and around Muttur Town.
This decision was made as a result of discussions with community
members and leaders at temporary shelters, and growing concern for
occupants of these shelters with approach of the monsoon season.
As at 12 September 2006, 59,723 individuals from 51 shelters across
six divisional secretariat divisions have safely returned to their
villages, whilst 3,850 individuals remain in temporary shelters.
The Government is providing dry food rations to IDPs in Muttur Town,
as well as temporary water, shelter and healthcare services.
Rehabilitation of community welfare services including healthcare,
education and livelihood activities have been deemed of high priority.
Banks and post offices within the town have reopened for business: DS
Secretariats are in full operation; vegetable and fish markets have
resumed trading and permission has been granted to fishermen to resume
fishing.
Schools have also been reopened, with 513 teachers returning to
several schools in the area.
The Government is committed to maintaining a coordinated approach to
activities within the area, to ensure all IDPs are supported through the
rehabilitation and reconstruction process, the President's Office said. |
