St. Alloysius bags Sumanasekara trophy
RUGBY: St. Aloysius College Galle clinched the coveted T.V.
Sumanasekara trophy for the 8th time by beating the arch rivals Richmond
College, Galle by 3 points (1 penalty) to nil in a match played at
Kandewatte ground Galle for the 15th year in keenly contested front of a
large crowd last Friday.
The only penalty for St. Aloysius came from 35 meters out by the
golden boots of centre Dinesh Manawadu during the 5th minute of the
play. Prior to the big match an under 14 and under 16 matches were also
played.
The under 14 match was won by Aloysiaus who beat Richmond College
29-nil while the under 16 was a nil all draw.
The tally of this big match Down South during the past years were:
St. Aloysius 7 time winners while the Richmondites won 6 and one was
drawn game.
This year too St. Aloysius clinched the plum. It was excellent rugby
by both sides when fast rugby was seen with fierce tackling who went man
to man with bone crushing tackling, witnessed by the parents of both
schools and the spectators who came in their numbers from all walks of
life for this grand gave of Rugby.
Kumar Abeywardana (President Ruhunu RFU) and his team of efficient
officials did an untiring job in organising this tournament. This rugby
encounter sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Ltd.
The chief guest was SSP Keerthi de Silva while the guest of honour
was Sanjaya Karunaratne (Merchandising and Promotions Manager Singer Sri
Lanka Ltd). Also present were the principals of both schools D.P.L.S.
Gunasekera (St. Aloysius) and W.N.R.P. Danius (Richmond College).
