Gayle ton spurs West Indies to 10-wicket win
CRICKET: West Indies opener Chris Gayle lashed 104 not out as the
defending champions crushed Bangladesh by 10 wickets to ease into the
main round of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old left-hander neatly paced his innings to reach 13th
one-day hundred to spur West Indies to 164 for none with 13.2 overs
after Bangladesh were 161 all out.
Jamaican Gayle struck 11 fours and three huge sixes from 118
deliveries, racing past fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who
made 52 not out.
West Indies, who beat Zimbabwe by nine wickets in their first game of
the four-team qualifying league, joined Sri Lanka in the eight-team main
round with a game to spare.
The two teams meet in their final game in Mumbai on Saturday.
Bangladesh and Zimbabwe play an inconsequential tie on Friday.
Gayle won the man-of-the-match award for the second game in a row,
after scoring 41 and taking three wickets against Zimbabwe.
He curbed his aggression at the start, reaching his first 50 off 78
balls, but then switched gears to reach his second half-century off just
38 balls, playing shots all around the wicket with his sixes sailing
into the stands.
Chanderpaul's 40th one-day fifty contained six fours and came off 104
balls.
Bangladesh batsman Aftab Ahmed struck a chancy 59 off 55 balls to
raise early hopes of a good showing before West Indies bowlers took
charge.
Aftab, 20, hit seven fours and two sixes after being dropped on 15,
adding 85 runs for the second wicket with left-handed opener Shahriar
Nafees (38).
However, paceman Corey Collymore grabbed two wickets off successive
balls on his return from thigh injury as three wickets fell for one run
in six balls to reduce Bangladesh to 96 for four.
Off spinner Marlon Samuels got the breakthrough, having Nafees caught
at slip before Collymore bowled new batsman Saqibul Hasan and trapped
skipper Habibul Bashar leg before for a duck.
Collymore missed a hat-trick, but Bangladesh lost the last nine
wickets for just 66 runs with only three batsmen managing double
figures.
Seamer Dwayne Bravo grabbed three late order wickets for 14 runs.
