Anandasangaree proved right
The LTTE is not at all concerned about
peace or a negotiated political settlement. This is a pronouncement by
none other than TULF leader V. Anandasangaree and all right-thinking
persons would wholeheartedly agree with him.
Anandasangaree should know better. He has not only seen the Tigers in
their true brutish nature all these 25 years but has been continually
hounded by these creatures of the wilds for no less a reason than
criticizing their bestial behaviour and holding independent views on
North-East politics.
In short, for having a mind of his own and keeping a clear
conscience. Therefore, when Anandasangaree speaks on the LTTE, one could
be certain that very perceptive comments are being voiced.
On this occasion too the veteran TULF politician could be considered
dead right. The spate of massacres carried out by the Tigers in recent
times is ample proof that peace is not at all on the Tigers' minds,
although they have spoken mellifluently about their commitment to
negotiations and peace. Their practice glaringly contradicts their
pronouncements.
If this were not so we would not be having gory massacres of the
magnitude of the recent Habarana carnage and the subsequent attack on
the Dakshina naval base. Could such heinous acts emanate from those
interested in ending the conflict by political means?
Clearly, the Tigers are intent on continuing their terror spree and
as long as they are hell-bent on this course, the State is duty-bound to
bring them to heel.
As Anandasangaree has pointed out, the Tigers would be incurring the
anger of all right-thinking persons through their destructive behaviour
because all sensible sections want to see an end to Lanka's torment by
political means. However, the Tigers are all out to disappoint them.
As we said yesterday, given this sad situation, the Government has no
choice but to adopt the toughest law and order measures against the
LTTE, because the State is duty-bound to protect the people and public
assets.
If the Tigers are concerned about the Tamil people - as they claim to
be - they should prove sensible opinion wrong and reverse their
horrifying behaviour. Until such time, the State is obliged to firmly
uphold the law.
As quite rightly pointed out by Government Peace Secretariat chief,
Dr. Palitha Kohonna, the entirety of the international community is
being held in contempt by the Tigers' continuing intransigence and
blood-thirstiness.
The world community is being calculatedly insulted because some
representatives of the Co-Chairs are already here in an effort to get
the LTTE to sit at the negotiating table.
Their expectations are high of the Tigers turning a new leaf but all
such hopes are being blown sky - high by the LTTE's destructive conduct.
The international community, therefore, has no choice but to get tough
with the Tigers and we hope they would do so sooner rather than later.
The Tigers' continued intransigence should be food for thought for
all lovers of Sri Lanka. Here is a terror group which is insistent on
keeping Sri Lanka on the boil through its fiendish conduct, while the
sensible course to follow would be to work towards a political
settlement of the conflict.
The Tigers' insistence on terror, only proves that they are single -
mindedly bent on not only destroying the Tamil community but the rest of
the Lankan polity as well.
This is the reason why the State is justified in taking the toughest
law and order measures against the LTTE. The Tigers need to learn that
violence would take them nowhere.
The State at this juncture cannot be seen to be weak. It must remain
tall and strong in the face of the hell-fires unleashed by the LTTE. It
cannot yield to evil - no way. |
