New school building for tsunami affected children
Gintota: A newly constructed school building at Gintota Sri
Medhankara Maha Vidyalaya will be handed over to the Principal and the
students today at a ceremony at the new building site at Gintota. The
handing over of the school comes when Sri Lanka completes the second
year of tsunami catastrophe.
Though two years have passed many are yet to be back to their homes;
children await good school buildings. Many have come forward to help in
the hour of dire need. This is one such story. A recent media coverage
disclosed difficulties and sufferings that the students undergo at
Gintota Maha Vidyalaya where classes are conducted in several temporary
sheds since tsunami.
A corporal social responsibility mission taken up by Islandwide
Marketing Services (Pvt) Ltd. and Semini Motors (Pvt) Ltd. has reached
its goal to facilitate and support the education of tsunami victimised
children by constructing modern school building at Sri Medhankara Maha
Vidyalaya, Gintota. The first phase of their corporate social
responsibility was the establishing of a foster parent support scheme
for 650 selected tsunami victim children in 2005.
The distribution of sponsorships and a package containing two school
uniforms, schoolbooks, a school bag and a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,000
for each child was inaugurated by First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. This
programme currently continues under the guidance and monitoring by Rev.
Haputale Pannarama of Sahanoda Foundation of Aththidiya. |
