Tigers causing misery to Jaffna - Social Services Minister

JAFFNA: The indiscriminate destruction by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have caused misery to the people of Jaffna. It is time for the people of Jaffna to rise to the occasion without being docile to the terrorists. It's only then that their problems could be settled, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda said.

The Minister was addressing worker representatives from Trade Unions of Jaffna fisher folk last week to resolve their problems.

The representatives urged Devananda to get them permission to bring ashore their boats and fishing gear abandoned in the sea and to grant them a relief package until they could resume their livelihood.

The Minister said his visit to Jaffna is to solve the problems faced by all citizens of Jaffna and solve the Jaffna fisher communities' problems.

"Knowing well that the Government Forces cannot be expelled out of Jaffna, Tigers carry out attacks against them using people as human shields causing destruction to property and lives," the Minister said.
