Sri Lanka youth Parliament working towards peace building
COLOMBO:Sri Lanka Youth Parliament (SLYP) conducted a
three-day residential workshop on skills for peace from February 16 to
18 for its Action Partners coming from all over Sri Lanka at the
Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS). Youth from all
districts including the North and East were present at the workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to encourage the youth of Sri Lanka
to actively participate in the peace building efforts.
Sri Lanka Youth Parliament is a project of BCIS that aims at
empowering the youth of Sri Lanka through the participation of the
decision making process of the country. Youth Activists at SLYP strongly
believe that they can be the strong advocates of peace.
They are concerned about their colleagues who go through hardships
due to the ongoing war and call for an end to the violence in the
country.
The workshop did not end with gaining skills for peace, but the
action areas were devised for them to engage in the future. Among them
are street dramas, cultural programmes, peace through sports, awareness
programmes in schools, youth exchange programmes within regions, music
albums, and peace fashion shows.
Youth participated were very much enthusiastic in using the
Information Technology in peace building activities.
They created a Bolg group for SLYP for the Action Partners to keep
their ideas on peace to be shared among each other. |
