Another eye-opener for the world
Wednesday’s blasting by the Navy of an
LTTE vessel laden with arms and explosives off Dondra Point, is indeed a
major victory for the Armed Forces in their ongoing efforts to quell
Tiger terrorism.
According to reports the vessel contained some 10,000 tons of arms
and this goes to prove that the Tigers are not allowing themselves any
breathing space in their stealthy operation of smuggling in weaponry and
replenishing their arsenals.
Thus are the Tigers flagrantly violating their obligations under the
CFA and holding up to ridicule the very idea of a ceasefire. This,
incidentally, is what they have been doing over the past five years but
before focusing on this aspect of the development we would like to
commend the
Navy for a job well done. They are proving in no uncertain terms that
they could easily meet any challenge posed by the LTTE and protect our
land from any sea-borne peril.
It should be noted that this latest incident off Dondra Point is the
latest in a string of huge defeats for the Tigers. We urge the Navy to
keep up the good work and the vigilance.
We hope that as in the case of the recent LTTE attack on the Western
diplomats and Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister, this defeat
handed out to the LTTE would prove an eye-opener to the world community.
For, it proves that the LTTE has been derisively disregarding all
important norms of conduct under the CFA. By being armed to the teeth,
the Tigers are not only proving a great danger to Sri Lanka but to the
entirety of the civilized world as well.
Therefore, the world has no choice but to crack the whip hard on the
LTTE. We believe that this task has been delayed for too long, resulting
in a gradual strengthening of the LTTE. However, the writing is on the
wall.
The Tigers have been replenishing their arsenals while some sections
of the world have been choosing to be complacent about it.
Unfortunately, among the international community there exist sections
which are willing to speak with a forked tongue on these questions. As a
democracy, we respect and nurture the freedom of expression but such
freedoms cannot be abused to preach division and discord.
Unfortunately, some democracies allow this, not realising that they
are wittingly or unwittingly working towards the unravelling of the
democratic system of government.
This happens every time the world chooses to go soft on the LTTE and
its destructive conduct.
We do not intend to imply that the task of resolving the conflict
here would end with the quelling of the LTTE terror threat.
The State is well on course towards working out a political solution
to the conflict and we hope this is perfectly comprehended by the
international community. However turning a blind eye on Tiger violations
would be tantamount to helping it to grow. |
