'Milo' school sports awards today
Awards: The Milo sponsored, Sri Lanka Schools Colours Awards ceremony
conducted by the Ministry of Education with the collaboration of the Sri
Lanka Schools Sports Council will take place today at the BMICH from
2.00 p.m. onwards.
The Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha will be the chief guest
and Steuart Young, the Managing Director of Nestle Lanka Ltd. will be
the guest of honour.
About 340 boys and girls from 116 schools will receive colours. This
year the Schools Sports Council has decided to give more prominence to
the schools rather than the event while awarding colours.
The following awards will be presented to 22 disciplines Swimming
(19), Athletics (25), Badminton(12) Boxing (3), Carrom (5), Chess (6),
Cricket (19) Elle (12), Football (19), Gymnastics (5), Hockey(32), Judo
(21), Kabbadi (4), Karate(44), Netball (24), Rugger (23), Softball
cricket (8), Squash (8), Tennis (17), Throw ball (12), Volleyball (7).
Nominations have also being received for the Emerging Sportsmen and
Sportswomen from the following schools.
Boys: Vimukthi Gunaratne (karate) - De Soysa College, Moratuwa;
Tharindu Samaraweera (table tennis) - S.Thomas' Mount Lavinia;
G.M.Liyanage (table tennis) - Dharmaraja, Kandy; Anton Jones Fernando
(football) - St. Benedict's College; Viraj Vithana (athletics) - D.S.
Senanayake; Milinda Wickremasinghe (swimming) - St. Joseph's, Colombo.
Girls: Dulanjali Ranasinghe (athletics) - Devi Balika; Chandrika
Subashini (athletics) - Senanayake MV, Madmape; U.G. Methmali (chess) -
Southland BV, Galle; Harshini Herath (judo) - Wevathenne MV; Kalpani
Herath (table tennis) - Girls High School, Kandy.
