Plans to mark 50 years of Agriculture Department

MATARA: A plan to award children of families entirely
depending on cultivation of paddy crops are suggested with scholarships
to pursue studies beyond G.C.E. O/L has been mooted.
Preference will be given to children of Samurdhi recipients in the
selection of candidates for awards. This is a part of the programme to
commemorate 50 years of the Department of Agriculture.
Any one interested in providing a scholarship in a sum of Rs. 1000
for 12 months could enlist himself or herself for the purpose.
As a part of the commemoration ceremony a programme for islandwide
competition in art and oratorical contests etc, will be open for the
participation by the children of farmers.
Another programme to hold sports competitions including softball
cricket matches among farmer organisations with the patronage of the
Ministry of Sports has been drawn up.
Those organisations and individuals who have served for the progress
of paddy cultivation and other crops for over 10-25 years will also be
evaluated and medals will be awarded with a view to make the event a
colourful one, religious ceremonies too will be conducted. |
