Walkers Tours go away with title

Travel Trade Beach Rugby:

BEACH RUGBY: Man-of-the-Tournament, D.S. Abeysekera turned in a robust performance to help Walkers Tours to win the third Travel Trade Sports Club Beach Rugby Championships, beating the Favourites, SriLankan Airlines by 15 points (five tries) to five points (one try) after leading 5-0 at half time, in the final at Eththugala Beach, Negombo yesteray.

The tournament revived after four years, was sponsored by Jetwing Hotels and hosted by Jetwing Beach, Negombo.

In the semi finals, Walkers Tours scored a comfortable 5-0 win over Jetwing Travels, while SriLankan Aiorlines scored a hard fought 10 points (two tries)to 5 points (a try) win over Grand Oriental Hotel.

In the play off for the third place, GOH after being led 5-0 at half time, came back strongly in the second half to beat the gutty Jetwng Travels “Blues” 10 points (two tries) to 5 points (a try).

Results (League): Walkers Tours beat Eden/Riverina 8/2, GOH beat Jetwing Travels 1/0, Sri Lankan Vs. Walkers Tours 1/1, GOH beat Aitken Spence Travels 5/0, Sri Lankan beat Eden / Riverina 6/0, Jetwing Travels beat Aitken Spence Travels 3/0.

The Negombo Hoteliers Association highly praised Jetwing Beach for hosting the tournament on a festive atmosphere, while the Weather Gods’ too acknowledged their effort by keeping the rains away and bathing Negombo’s famous Eththukala Beach at Lewis Place with glorious Sun shine.
