Some UNPers appointed Co-Chairmen to accelerate district development

COLOMBO: The Members of the UNP who crossed over to the Government have not been appointed as SLFP organisers in the respective districts but some of them have been appointed as Co-Chairmen of the District Development Committees to accelerate development work.

This was said by Minister Maithipala Sirisena clarifying the position of the UNPers who crossed over to the Government as there had been a misunderstanding over the appointment of some of them to District Development Committees.

Government Information Department sources said that while Minister Anura Bandaranaike continues as the Chairman of the District Development Committee in the Gampaha district, Minister Karu Jayasuriya has been appointed the Co-chairman, of the committee.

Likewise, in Nuwara Eliya district while Minister C. B. Ratnayake heads the District Development Committee as its Chairman, Minister Navin Dissanayake has been appointed Co-chairman of that Committee.

Minister Sirisena who is also the Secretary General of the SLFP said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has made these appointments to accelerate the district development work in pursuance of the Mahinda Chintanaya.

He also pointed out that in the District Development Committees attention and discussions are centred on the development of the district and not on politics.

The District Development Committees represent all political parties and the members representing their respective political parties discuss development and bring proposals to draw up project plans, the Minister said.
