It should be noted that while the Donoughmore
and Soulbury constitutions of 1948 as well as the 1972 Republican
Constitution provided for election of individual members to
Parliament, the 1978 constitution obliterated the importance of the
individuality of the members and made it compulsory to elect
registered political parties or independent groups to Parliament.
