COLOMBO:The annual celebration of the “Nena Guna Weduma”
programme initiated by the Presidential Social Development Unit would
take place at 3.00 p.m. today at the Maharagama Youth Service Council
auditorium.
“Nena Guna Weduma”-a vision of President Mahinda Rajapaksa with the
intention to uplift education-social status in the conflicted affected
areas, saw its inception in the aftermath of the Kebithigollewa bus bomb
blast, where innocent civilians became the victims of LTTE terror
including a number of schoolchildren.
Todays event would see the gathering of 100 schoolchildren from three
schools in the North East namely, Pulmude M.V. in Trincomalee, Ruwanpura
M.V. and Buddha Mangala M.V. in Padaviya.
The programme is to continue for nine days with a number of projects
been aligned to help the children in many spheres. These would include
educational seminars, scholarship programmes, personality-leadership
development projects, shramadana campaigns, health camps etc.
During the programme the children would be given an audience with the
President, who’s initiative has paved the way for these children to get
a much needed exposure in education and social development.
The inaugurating programme of the “Nena Guna Weduma” was held at the
Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, on July 12, 2006 under the patronage of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Since then the project has made a
significant impact, a much needed boost to the children in the conflict
affected areas. |
